The Veil
Finland, along with the rest of the world, saw great changes in the 19th century. Industrialization, transportation, and the spread of information made the world drastically smaller. Mankind was on the threshold of a new age, new knowledge, and new humanity.
In the West, this century of changes also witnessed the rise of a new wave of occultism that sought alternatives for mainstream spirituality. Seekers turned their gaze to ancient mystery cults, obscure texts, and the Orientalism of the time, trying to revive forgotten spiritual traditions as well as create new ones.
In a short time, a large number of movements and secret societies spread across the Western world, forever marking our culture. As the occult trends of Europe arrived to Finland, they met its newly-revived pagan heritage and its mythical national epic Kalevala, resulting in a unique blend of ideas.
The Veil chronicles the arrival of these movements to Finland in the 19th century and examines their influence on artists like Jean Sibelius and Akseli Gallen-Kallela, the masters of the Golden Age of Finnish art and the shapers of Finnish identity.
The Occult history of Finland comes to life as described by academic scholars, cultural figures, and practicing occultists.
